Cheap Flights to the Costa del Sol – Hotel Deals Costa del Sol

Find Cheapest Flights for the Costa del Sol

Cheap flights and the best deals on hotels and other accommodation on the Costa del Sol? Are there really such things? If they exist, I bet they are hard to find; right?

Well, that depends on how you go about looking for them. Flights and hotel rooms are expensive in the high season, everyone knows that. But, if you follow the hints and tips on this blog, you might get lucky.

In our quest to further help people enjoy a holiday on the Costa del Sol, I have added two search forms. One in the right-hand column of the page, this is to search for hotels and the large form above, for flights.

However; remember, Nerja Beach Holidays has the very best, Costa del Sol holiday villas deals available. Be sure to check out our main website first.

How to use Cheap Flights search form

Ceap flights and cheap hotel rooms Costa del sol

Burriana Beach is a great place for water sports and other activities

This is a pretty simple exercise. Add your location airport (I’ve used Liverpool as an example) and then add your destination airport (I’ve used Malaga, where else?). Then add your departure date, return date and how many passengers.

This will take you to Jetradar website. From here you will see a list of flights and the airlines that are operating them. The currency and language can be changed from the top right of the page (Small flag).

There is bags of information and lots of options, such as direct flights, stop-overs, baggage, flight duration and so on.

Hotel Booking Search

The second tab on the search form is for hotels. Again, its very simple. You add your preferred destination (Add Nerja and you get a drop-down field) your arrival date and departure date. Add the number of people and away you go.

This will take you to the Hotellook website. Again, you can change the language and currency from the flag at the top right hand of the page. You have the options of choosing the top-rated by guests, cheapest, most stars, type of accommodation and lots more. It’s a great little search form and one I hope you will use.

The Costa del Sol on a budget? Is this possible or just another sales pitch? We’ve all been reeled in at one time or another with the promise of cut-priced hotel deals, cheap flights, last-minute bargains and so on.

What’ more, they are kind enough to pass on their hints and tips so we can all take advantage of these bargains.

Like millions of other people, I have become a great fan of the Money Saving Expert program. I am also a big fan of the show’s website of the same name.

top 10 Water Parks on the Costa del Sol

Water Parks on the Costa del Sol

top 10 Water Parks on the Costa del Sol

Tivoli World is one of the top Water Parks on the Costa del Sol

Looking back on childhood holidays, we always remember the sunny days and the sea or other water attractions. Water Parks linger long in the memory and are a source of great happiness. especially for children of any age.

The Costa del Sol has abundant sunshine, warm weather and long days. This makes it the perfect location for a Water Park. Booking your villa, apartment or townhouse close to the beach is the start of a great holiday.

What is a Water Park?

If you have never been to one of the parks, then you are in for a treat. Imagine being in an area that has all sorts of water slides, rubber ring rapids, small pools and large pools as well as tidal pools that emulate the sea.

Add to that a sunbed and an area for relaxing as well as a restaurant and changing area. That is your standard Water Park.

  • Aqualand: Torremolinos. Big family-focused water park with lots of slides, rapids & a surf beach area with a wave machine.
  • Aquavélis: Torre del Mar: This water park is a favourite with tourists and locals alike.
  • Aquatropic Almuñécar: Family fun in this very popular park.
  • Bahia Park: Algeciras. This park is along the Costa del Sol close to Gibraltar
  • Costa Waterpark: Many different locations, including Fuengirola and Benalmadena.
  • Cable Ski and Wakeboard Centre: San Pedro Alcantara
  • Funny Beach: Marbella. A family attraction with 2 go-kart tracks, bumper boats & water sports such as tubing & jet skiing.
  • Holiday Beach Club: Benalmadena. The Beach Club is the main attraction when staying in the Holiday World Resort, with amazing themed outdoor pools, waterslides, superb sports facilities
  • Parque Acuatico Mijas: Mijas. Waterpark with a wave pool, slides & a kids’ play area, also lounge chairs, snack bars & lockers.
  • Tivoli World: Sol Pier is an amusement park located in Benalmádena

Not Just Water Parks

These are some of the great places to visit when on your Costa del Sol vacations. Most hotels, apartments, villas and townhouses have their own pools, both private and communal.

Rather than add a link to each of the Costa del Sol Water Parks, I thought I might just add one.

The Thomas Cook website has a great synopsis on all of these parks. Check out the description of each in this Blog and then take a trip, via Google, to the company websites. You will easily find the best water amusements for you.

Have a great time.

Aparthotels along the Costa del sol – What is an Aparthotel

Apart-Hotel, Apart’hotel or Aparthotel?

The biggest difference to a hotel is that not only an individual bathroom but also an own kitchen is standard.

In contrast to a holiday home, however, services such as changing bed linen and towels are included. This gives you the service you are used to from a hotel, combined with the freedom that a holiday home offers.

In essence, an apartment hotel brings together the best of both worlds. Thanks, Smartments

There are many Aparthotels along the Costa del Sol

This type of accommodation may not suit everyone. However, there are tourists who find the idea of accommodation without the itinerary of mealtimes and other restricts to be ideal. Self-catering Aparthotels offer the freedom of movement that allows people to venture further afield on their vacation.

What are the top 10 Aparthotels on the Costa del Sol?

Apart Hotel Costa del Sol

One of my favourite places is the Marinas de Nerja

The top ten Aparthotels on the Costa del Sol would be a hard list to make. There are so many different variables by which to judge, price, size, service, location and so on. Some of the more well known Apart Hotels along the Costa del Sol are:

  • Sunset Beach Club (Arroyo de la Miel)
  • Benalmadena Palace (Benalmadena -where else?)
  • Gran Hotel Guadalpin Banus (Puerto Banus)
  • Hotel PYR (Marbella)
  • Sahara Sunset Club (Benalmadena)
  • Hotel El Faro (Marbella)
  • Hotel PYR (Fuengirola)
  • Marinas de Nerja Beach and Spa (Nerja)
  • Apartamentos Princesa Playa (Marbella)

There is a great website for Hotels, Aparthotels and other accommodation on the coast Expedia.

This website lists the accommodation as well as giving you guest rating and prices. Take a good look and see what type of accommodation you can get for your money. You may also get some great bargains.

Always check out the quality and prices using sites such as Expedia, TripAdvisor and such like. These websites offer you real client responses by which you can make an informed decision.

Wasps; How to get rid of them without the use of pest control sprays

Wasps in Spain are not as agressive as UK Wasps

People don’t like Wasps around them. In general, people are afraid of getting stung by Wasps and tend to swat them or spray them if they get too close.

I got stung on the Norfolk Broads by a Wasp, the little beggar just flew towards me and let me have it on the leg. It was painful, I can tell you. Since living in Spain, almost 18 years now, I have been stung 3 times. Each time it was my own fault. I unwittingly picked something up that had a Wasp hiding underneath. The sting wasn’t as painful as his mate’s in the UK though.

People on holiday can often come into contact with wasps, especially in the country. You can rent a villa or townhouse n the Malaga countryside and find that you have a nest of the critters flying about. The first thing is not to start swatting them, it just annoys them.

Getting rid of Wasps without sprays or poisons

How to get rid of Wasps without the use of pest control sprays

I have lived in the Andalucia countryside for 18 years. I’ve had my fair share of Wasps nests and I normally don’t mind them. Wasps are good for the environment. They play a vital role in protecting gardens and farm crops by controlling pest populations. They capture and consume insects such as flies, caterpillars and beetle larvae.

But sometimes, when there are too many in my garden, they just have to go. My method is clean, simple and without the use of poisons or sprays.

  1. Get yourself a bowl of some kind, anything will do. I use plastic tubs that would normally be discarded.
  2. Fill the container to the top with water
  3. Add a tiny drop of detergent (washing up liquid is great)
  4. Place the container close to the most wasp activity
  5. Wait

The Wasps are always looking for water. They will fly down for a drink and quite often venture on to the surface. Because you have added some detergent, you break the surface tension of the water and the creatures sink and drown.

That’s it! When you have topped a good few, change the water and repeat until you are Wasp free. You can easily rid yourself of a hundred or more in one day, depending on how many pots or containers you use.

If you are in a real state of Wasp invasion, then, at the last resort, you can call out the Pest Control and they will sort the problem for you.

How to get cheap Hotels on the Costa del Sol – Top 25 Tips

Cheap hotels and rooms on the Costa del Sol

The Money Saving Expert: Martin Lewis

Cheap Hotels and Rooms? Just how do I get them, you may ask? Martin Lewis of Moneysavingexpert.com shows you how to get the very best deals and cheap hotels and other accommodation.

If you have never watched his TV programs or seen his website then you really should. Martin Lewis has a fantastic reputation for saving people money, often thousands, sometimes tens of thousands.

If you were ever going to take advice from somebody on money-saving matters, then Mr Lewis is the chap.

I watched a program last night and part of the program was dedicated to tips on how to get the cheapest hotels and rooms. As usual, Martin has a trick or two up his sleeve. I’m not too sure the Hotels and other tourist accommodation suppliers would be happy about it though.

What Martin says, is this; If you have booked a hotel or room or whatever and it has a free cancellation clause, then check out the prices of hotels in the area you are going. If you find one that is cheaper than the hotel or rooms you have booked. Cancel and rebook at a cheaper rate.

The prices of hotels and accommodation are not static as they have to go with supply and demand. If the demand is high, the prices are high. However; if the demand is not as high as expected, hotels, rooms and other types of tourist accommodations will lower the prices.

Here are martins tips to get cheap deals, hotels and rooms. I’m sure the Costa del Sol is no different to anywhere else when it comes to business matters.

Cheap Hotels and Rooms: Top 25 Tips

Costa del Sol Winter Holidays 2019/2020 – Best Winter breaks deals to Spain

Best winter holiday deals Costa del Sol 2029/2020

Mr J P Doyle enjoying the miserable weather on the coast

Using the search term ‘Best Costa del Sol Winter breaks deals’ the following company websites are the top ten best Costa del Sol Winter breaks deals on Google. As you can see, they are the usual suspects. The big travel companies tend to dominate the upper pages of the main search engines.

My advice is to start from 21 downwards as quite often you will pick up a great bargain from websites in the lower reaches of the SERPS. Because the main travel companies have massive sites, the smaller companies are pushed off the top. Dig deep and you will strike gold!

Using the search term ‘Best Costa del Sol Winter breaks deals’ the following company websites are the top ten best Costa del Sol winter breaks deals on Google. There are no surprises I’m afraid. However! (update 28/07/19) in at Nº11 is this very blog you are reading now. That’s not bad for 11 days, hopefully, with a few tweaks, we can topple a few of these top ten companies off the page.

Winter Sun holidays to Spain are very popular. Especially with people from countries such as the UK where the weather is pretty gloomy from October onwards. People who have the time and finances often jet off for a break in the sunshine. The Costa del Sol is often the location of choice.

Why holidays on the Costa del Sol

Best Winter Holiday deals to the Costa del Sol in Spain

An easy one that; the weather. Winter weather on the Costa del Sol finds the temperatures between December and February are about 14 °C. Winter is a wet season for the resort with December being the wettest month of the year with average rainfall at 100mm. The Costa del Sol receives between 5 and 7 hours of daily sunshine in the winter. quite often you will get dry winters and warmer weather. At least you are guaranteed some warm, dry weather and blue skies. Weather for Spain.

Golf is another factor. People come to the coast in their hundreds of thousands each year, a lot of them to play golf. Know as ‘the Costa del Golf’ due to its dozens of golf courses all along the coast, the Costa del Sol guarantees that the golfers will get enough time on the courses to keep them happy.

Price is another factor. Winter Sun breaks on the Costa del Sol can be very competitive. With the many hotels, hostels, private villas and apartments all offering winter breaks, you can find a real bargain. The advent of the Internet means that people can search, at their own leisure, for the best prices for their Spanish winter holiday breaks.

Flights are cheaper too. The budget airlines offer you the very best deals for flights into Malaga from all over the UK and Europe. Again, sites such as Skyscanner can get you a real hot deal winter flight into Malaga, although they are not the only company doing this.

Travel agents are also a great source of fantastic winter breaks to Nerja and other places along the Spanish coast. Quite often you will get an all-inclusive winter break for the entire family at a knock-down price.

Remember to search the Internet

Obviously business drops off during the winter months and so the hotels and other tourist accommodation businesses need to attract clients with juicy special offers. The travel agents can find these if you don’t want to search for yourself.

So, check out the Internet, travel agents, airlines and private villas and apartments for the best breaks deals in 2019/2020. A little effort may save you a lot of money.

Lastly (but not least) Check out the main Nerja Beach Holidays website for some fantastic Nerja villas, apàrtments and townhouses at great rates.

Where to see Flamingos – Fuente de Piedra in Andalucia

Holidays on the Costa del Sol - Fuente de Piedra Lake Flamingos

Flamingos on Fuente de Piedra Lake – Photo by M. Luque

Flamingos are one of the most beautiful and graceful of all birds. The name ‘Flamingo’ comes from the Portuguese or Spanish for ‘flame-coloured’. One look at these beautiful birds would make that statement self-explanatory.

Flamingos or flamingoes are a type of wading bird in the family Phoenicopteridae, the only bird family in the order Phoenicopteriformes. Four flamingo species are distributed throughout the Americas, including the Caribbean, and two species are native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. Wiki/flamingo.

Fuente Piedra Flamingos

Being as it was another beautiful day, we decided to take a trip on a different type of excursion. I had visited the Flamingos at Fuente Piedra some years back but my friend had not. So, why not a return visit? So, off we went.

Getting to the lake at Fuente de Piedra

No matter where you are located along the Costa del Sol, the route to the Flamingo Lake is quite an easy drive although from Nerja it is 1 hour and 20 minutes but well worth the drive.

The website for the company running the tourist facilities at Fuente de Piedra has an excellent website with easy Directions to Flamingo Lake.

The company offers private guided tours for those wanting to really get involved with the subject. There are kiddie-carts to help the younger members of the group to get around the many walkways and there are disabled facilities.

The Company Website

The lake of Fuente de Piedra is the biggest of Andalucía, and offers a privileged environment for the flamingo breeding. Also, it is a wintering and migratory place for many other birds. Flamingo nesting is one of the most amazing events of the year.

The natural reserve is located in the northwest of Málaga province, in the village of Fuente de Piedra.

In the natural reserve, we do, among other activities, guided visits to know the lake, its history, flora and fauna. We have permission to enter exclusive viewpoints, restricted for the public, from where we will enjoy a wonderful view of the lake and the flamingoes. Photo Galleries

If the great outdoors is for you and you would like to see beautiful Flamingos in their natural habitat, then please go to Fuente de Piedra Flamingo lake. Take binoculars with you. If you are not going on a guided tour the viewpoints are some distance from the birds.

There are literally tens of thousands of Flamingos, so, don’t worry about not seeing any.

Best Things to Do in Nerja – My Top Ten Things to Do and See in Nerja

Nerja Best things to do – My Top Ten

Nerja Top Ten things to do and see

King Alfonso XII on the Balcòn de Europa, Nerja. He’s always ready for a photograph or two.

Nerja is a great place at any time of the year, not just in the summer months. There are lots to see and do in and around Nerja town. I’m using TripAdvisor for some of the stats on this one. I’ve also added my own personal favourites. You can book the trips directly from this website.

  1. Nerja Caves: The Nerja Caves are a fantastic day out. The Caves of Nerja are a series of caverns close to the town of Nerja in the Province of Málaga, Spain. Stretching for almost 5 kilometres, the caverns are one of Spain’s major tourist attractions. Concerts are regularly held in one of the chambers, which forms a natural amphitheatre. There are several concerts being held in the caves in July Wikipedia
  2. Kayak & Snorkeling Tour in Natural Park ‘Acantilados de Cerro Gordo – Maro’. If you are a water sports enthusiast, then this is a trip for you.
  3. Visit Frigiliana: Frigiliana close to Nerja It’s known for its Moorish old quarter and narrow streets decorated with ceramic mosaics. El Ingenio is a 16th-century Renaissance palace now housing a sugar cane factory. Exhibits at the Archaeological Museum include Neolithic bones, Phoenician pottery and a 16th-century dagger. Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park shelters Spanish ibex and peregrine falcons. You’ll need strong legs if you are considering walking around Frigiliana. The streets can be very steep and narrow in some parts. It is well worth the effort though.
  4. Burriana Beach: For me, Burriana is the best beach on the Costa del Sol. There are plenty of Chiringuito’s (Beachfront Restaurants) as well as a great Chinese restaurant, along with traditional Spanish food. Shops, bars and Cafe’s aplenty and a great sandy beach with great views. Known worldwide for the best Paella, Ayo’s Chiringuito has been the subject of many top travel programmes.
  5. Church of El Salvador: The church of El Salvador is just off the Balcòn de Europa and surrounded by lots of places to sit, eat, drink and watch the world pass by. El Salvador (The Saviour) in the Catholic faith is, of course, Jesus Christ. So, it’s The Church of Jesus Christ, Nerja. On entering this great church, your eyes are first directed straight forward to a magnificent and ornate altar. This alters as an arch of gold leafed and ornate carvings, under which there is a large figure of Christ on the cross. El Salvador Church.
  6. The Balcòn de Europa: Along with the Nerja Caves, the Balcòn de Europa (Balcony of Europe) is another great attraction for the tourists coming to Nerja. The Balcòn is an outcrop of rock the juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. There are hotels, restaurants, ice cream vendors and musicians playing their trade. The Balcon has a permanent resident in the form of a statue of King Alfonso XII close to the end. He is great for a photo opportunity. People like to stroll up and down the Balcòn de Europa because there is sea vies, beach views and the mountains to the rear. Be sure to have your camera with you for this one.
  7. Trekking on the Chillar River: Water trekking on the Río Chilar is a refreshing excursion with a charm in the interior of the Chíllar ravine. It is a refreshing hiking route, ideal for any family member, regardless of age, since it is easy and fun, low difficulty. A journey of 8 kilometres between round and round, by the channel of the Río Chillar that is in Nerja, in the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. You can book a trip if you don’t want to head off on your own.
  8. Organised Day Trips to Seville: Using Nerja as a base, you can explore Malaga and the towns, villages and great cities of Andalucia. Day trips from Nerja to places such as Seville are well worth the money. If you don’t visit any other city while you are in Spain; go to Seville.
  9. Hiking around Nerja and up to El Cielo. If its breathtaking sights you are looking for (as well as breathless sights) then hiking in the area surrounding Nerja is for you. The Sierra de Tejada Almijarra Natural Park and the natural area of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo both offer you the opportunity of some great exercise and stunning scenery. Check out this article by John Kramer
  10. Nerja Segway Tours: Some people find walking around in the heat a bit of a hassle. So, what better way to see all the great sights and places of interest than going about on wheels. One and a half hour Guided Tour around Nerja, in a very small group, get to see the best places in town in the best way possible. Nerja Segway Tours

This is just my Top Ten Nerja sights and Activities, best things to do and see. There are many more places to go and much more to see, not just in Nerja but along the Costa del Sol, Malaga as well as wider Andalucia.

If I were to add to the list, it would be a visit to the ancient towns and cities, such as Granada, Antequera, Cordoba, Ronda, Malaga and the rural villages or ‘Pueblos Blancos’. I haven’t included Golf in my top ten as it goes without saying. The Costa del Sol has so many Golf courses, its nicknamed ‘The Costa del Golf’. You can play 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For foodies, Nerja is a great place to sample traditional Spanish tapas. There is a great Tapas Trail in Nerja that is highly recommended. Also, other cuisines are well represented, such as Italian, Chinese and Indian to mention a few. My own favourite is the Goa Town Indian Restaurant. Try the Fal extra hot curry, it is beautiful.

If you’re after some traditional Spanish culture, there are concerts and shows held in the fantastic Nerja Caves as well a Flamenco bars such as the Burro Blanco. Last but not least, Nerja is alive with buskers and street entertainers. Human statues, cartoonists, musicians, jugglers and more. There is something for everybody Burro Blanco Flamenco.

Whare your best things? Please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol – Top Ten Hotels Costa del Sol

Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol?

Best Hotels Costa del Sol - Top ten hotels Costa del Sol

Riu Monica Nerja – According to some, one of the best hotels on the Costa del Sol

The best hotels on the Costa del Sol? The Costa del Sol, for those of you who have never been, is situated on Spain’s southern coastline, in the Province of Malaga and in the autonomous region of Andalucia.

‘Coast of the Sun’ or ‘Sun Coast’, the Costa del Sol, sits between The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) and The Costa Tropical (Tropical Coast).

It is probably the best-known area of Spain due to the mass tourism that has grown since the early seventies.

Towns of the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol includes the city of Málaga and also the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona, Manilva, Casares, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox.

Geography of the Costa del Sol

This shoreline region extends from the cliffs at Maro in the East to Punta Chullera in the west. It occupies a narrow coastal strip delimited by some ranges of the Penibaetic System, including the Sierra de Mijas, Sierra Alpujata, Sierra Blanca, Sierra Bermeja, Sierra Crestallina and Montes de Málaga to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

The coast shows a diversity of landscapes: beaches, cliffs, estuaries, bays and dunes. The rivers are short and seasonal, while the agriculture is hampered by the lee effect caused by the Baetic System.

The Costa del Sol is similar to southern California in the scenery, climate and geography. Both areas have warm weather throughout the year and average annual sunshine hours of about 3,000 hours. The Costa del Sol has some of the most expensive tourist resorts in Europe as well. Thanks to Wikipedia.

The Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol according to…

TripAdvisor.

  • Melia Costa del SolSol House Costa del Sol (By Melia)
  • Marbella Hills Hotel and Spa
  • Sol Principe (By Melia)
  • Sol Malaga Guadalmar (By Melia)
  • Sunset Beach Club
  • Hotel Catalonia Ronda
  • LLunion Malaga
  • MB Boutique Hotel
  • Petit Palace Plaza Malaga

Now, that comes from the TripAdvisor website, when you search Google for the Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol.

Other travel sites will have their own opinions. So too will visitors to the Costa. It is always wise to read the travellers reviews before you book your holiday on the Spanish Costas.
Also, what makes any one of the thousands of hotels on the coast ‘the best’?

Is it quality of service, value for money, amenities, location or any other number of variables?

For my pennies worth, a clean room, polite staff and good food are what I look for.
If you have a minute and you would like to have your favourite Costa del Sol Hotel mentioned, please, drop me a line and I will be delighted to add them to my Blog.

According to some friends of mine, Riu Monica in Nerja is definitely the very best.

After all, the best hotels are those that are highly recommended by their guests.

Nerja Festivals – The Feast of San Juan

Night of San Juan in Nerja – la Noche de San Juan

Fiesta de San Juan in Nerja

Last night on Burriana Beach in Nerja was different from other nights. Any night on Burriana beach is a great time to be there. With pubs, bars, restaurants, shops and of course, the sea and sand, you’re bound to have a great time.

Sunday night, the 23rd of June is a night reserved for San Juan. Fire features in many of the celebrations, with people gathering together and creating large bonfires from any kind of wood, such as old furniture, and sharing food and drinks while teens and children jump over the fires.

Each region has its own unique way to celebrate and Nerja is no different.

Who was San Juan?

St. John the Baptist, (born 1st decade BCE, Judaea, Palestine, near Jerusalem—died 28–36 CE; feast day June 24), Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the imminence of God’s Final Judgment and baptized those who repented in self-preparation for it; he is revered in the Christian church as the forerunner of Jesus Christ.

After a period of desert solitude, John the Baptist emerged as a prophet in the region of the lower Jordan River valley. He had a circle of disciples, and Jesus was among the recipients of his rite of baptism. More facts for St. John the Baptist

San Juan or Saint John is celebrated all around the world. The festivals of Midsummer’s Eve (St. John’s Eve among Christians) have roots in ancient celebrations related to the summer solstice.

Feast of Noche de San Juan in Nerja Spain

Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southward again. In later years, witches were also thought to be on their way to meetings with other powerful beings.

Fire: Bonfires are lit, usually around midnight both on beaches and inland, so much so that one usually cannot tell the smoke from the mist common in this Atlantic corner of Iberia at this time of the year, and it smells burnt everywhere.

Occasionally, a dummy is placed at the top, representing a witch or the devil. Young and old gather around them and feast mostly on pilchards, potatoes boiled in their skins and maize bread.

When it is relatively safe to jump over the bonfire, it is done three times (although it could also be nine or any odd number) for good luck at the cry of “meigas fora” (witches off!).

San Juan doesn’t stop there!

It is also common to have Queimada (drink), a beverage resulting from setting alight Galician orujo mixed with sugar, coffee beans and pieces of fruit, which is prepared while chanting an incantation against evil spirits. See More on this fascinating story from Wikipedia.

If you were not in Nerja for the feast of San Juan, make sure you don’t miss it next year.

Nerja villas with private swimming pools

Nerja villas with private swimming pools – Villa Las Dalias

Once you have been to Nerja, it is hard not to return. The charm of this Spanish coastal town has people coming back year on year. Some people are so smitten that they decide to buy a property in Nerja.

This may not be as easy as it seems. With a buoyant real estate market, the best properties can be hard to find. That is where a good real estate agent comes to the fore.

Local knowledge s a great help and the Nerja real estate agents have just that. They will find you the property that you really want, and at the best price.

Many people buy holiday homes for themselves, also, to rent out for a second income. As Nerja is so popular, this is a very achievable aim. If you consider the fact that 30 million people visit Spain each year. Out of that 30 million, the Costa del Sol attracts 35%.

So, roughly 10.5 million visitors to the Costa del. That’s a lot of visitors. So, a property to rent out is definitely something to e thinking about.

Buying a retirement home

Nerja Villas apartments houses Fore Rent

The population of Nerja is around 21,000 – 22,000 (2018) fluctuating year on year. There is a sizeable ex-pat population, roughly estimated at around 30%. So, the competition for houses is quite strong.

Real estate agents in Nerja can provide you with the easiest route to buying your own Nerja property. Although there are a limited amount of private sales. Such as the great property on offer at Nerja Paradise Rentals.

Nonetheless, you will need the help of a good real estate agent when it comes down to the legal side of real estate transfers.

Nerja Estate Agents and properties for sale – Update 28/06/19

There is a local free newspaper in Andalucia called Sur in English. This is an English language free publication that has a host of information about Southern Spain as well as Andalucia. Also, individual villages, towns and cities. Nerja is quite often featured.

This weeks edition features a story about the booming population of Malaga.

According to the Sur in English, the Costa del Sol and Malaga areas are pulling in the people. Other areas of Spain are losing residents. 10,000 new souls came to make their home in Malaga province. Many along the Costa del Sol.

The greater number of the new population is from the UK. The rest are from Europe and a small proportion from elsewhere.

This is good news for the Nerja real estate agents in particular. After all, people will always need homes.

You can check out this story and others from the Sur in English Print Edition.
