Best Things to Do in Nerja – My Top Ten Things to Do and See in Nerja

Nerja Best things to do – My Top Ten

Nerja Top Ten things to do and see

King Alfonso XII on the Balcòn de Europa, Nerja. He’s always ready for a photograph or two.

Nerja is a great place at any time of the year, not just in the summer months. There are lots to see and do in and around Nerja town. I’m using TripAdvisor for some of the stats on this one. I’ve also added my own personal favourites. You can book the trips directly from this website.

  1. Nerja Caves: The Nerja Caves are a fantastic day out. The Caves of Nerja are a series of caverns close to the town of Nerja in the Province of Málaga, Spain. Stretching for almost 5 kilometres, the caverns are one of Spain’s major tourist attractions. Concerts are regularly held in one of the chambers, which forms a natural amphitheatre. There are several concerts being held in the caves in July Wikipedia
  2. Kayak & Snorkeling Tour in Natural Park ‘Acantilados de Cerro Gordo – Maro’. If you are a water sports enthusiast, then this is a trip for you.
  3. Visit Frigiliana: Frigiliana close to Nerja It’s known for its Moorish old quarter and narrow streets decorated with ceramic mosaics. El Ingenio is a 16th-century Renaissance palace now housing a sugar cane factory. Exhibits at the Archaeological Museum include Neolithic bones, Phoenician pottery and a 16th-century dagger. Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park shelters Spanish ibex and peregrine falcons. You’ll need strong legs if you are considering walking around Frigiliana. The streets can be very steep and narrow in some parts. It is well worth the effort though.
  4. Burriana Beach: For me, Burriana is the best beach on the Costa del Sol. There are plenty of Chiringuito’s (Beachfront Restaurants) as well as a great Chinese restaurant, along with traditional Spanish food. Shops, bars and Cafe’s aplenty and a great sandy beach with great views. Known worldwide for the best Paella, Ayo’s Chiringuito has been the subject of many top travel programmes.
  5. Church of El Salvador: The church of El Salvador is just off the Balcòn de Europa and surrounded by lots of places to sit, eat, drink and watch the world pass by. El Salvador (The Saviour) in the Catholic faith is, of course, Jesus Christ. So, it’s The Church of Jesus Christ, Nerja. On entering this great church, your eyes are first directed straight forward to a magnificent and ornate altar. This alters as an arch of gold leafed and ornate carvings, under which there is a large figure of Christ on the cross. El Salvador Church.
  6. The Balcòn de Europa: Along with the Nerja Caves, the Balcòn de Europa (Balcony of Europe) is another great attraction for the tourists coming to Nerja. The Balcòn is an outcrop of rock the juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. There are hotels, restaurants, ice cream vendors and musicians playing their trade. The Balcon has a permanent resident in the form of a statue of King Alfonso XII close to the end. He is great for a photo opportunity. People like to stroll up and down the Balcòn de Europa because there is sea vies, beach views and the mountains to the rear. Be sure to have your camera with you for this one.
  7. Trekking on the Chillar River: Water trekking on the Río Chilar is a refreshing excursion with a charm in the interior of the Chíllar ravine. It is a refreshing hiking route, ideal for any family member, regardless of age, since it is easy and fun, low difficulty. A journey of 8 kilometres between round and round, by the channel of the Río Chillar that is in Nerja, in the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. You can book a trip if you don’t want to head off on your own.
  8. Organised Day Trips to Seville: Using Nerja as a base, you can explore Malaga and the towns, villages and great cities of Andalucia. Day trips from Nerja to places such as Seville are well worth the money. If you don’t visit any other city while you are in Spain; go to Seville.
  9. Hiking around Nerja and up to El Cielo. If its breathtaking sights you are looking for (as well as breathless sights) then hiking in the area surrounding Nerja is for you. The Sierra de Tejada Almijarra Natural Park and the natural area of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo both offer you the opportunity of some great exercise and stunning scenery. Check out this article by John Kramer
  10. Nerja Segway Tours: Some people find walking around in the heat a bit of a hassle. So, what better way to see all the great sights and places of interest than going about on wheels. One and a half hour Guided Tour around Nerja, in a very small group, get to see the best places in town in the best way possible. Nerja Segway Tours

This is just my Top Ten Nerja sights and Activities, best things to do and see. There are many more places to go and much more to see, not just in Nerja but along the Costa del Sol, Malaga as well as wider Andalucia.

If I were to add to the list, it would be a visit to the ancient towns and cities, such as Granada, Antequera, Cordoba, Ronda, Malaga and the rural villages or ‘Pueblos Blancos’. I haven’t included Golf in my top ten as it goes without saying. The Costa del Sol has so many Golf courses, its nicknamed ‘The Costa del Golf’. You can play 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For foodies, Nerja is a great place to sample traditional Spanish tapas. There is a great Tapas Trail in Nerja that is highly recommended. Also, other cuisines are well represented, such as Italian, Chinese and Indian to mention a few. My own favourite is the Goa Town Indian Restaurant. Try the Fal extra hot curry, it is beautiful.

If you’re after some traditional Spanish culture, there are concerts and shows held in the fantastic Nerja Caves as well a Flamenco bars such as the Burro Blanco. Last but not least, Nerja is alive with buskers and street entertainers. Human statues, cartoonists, musicians, jugglers and more. There is something for everybody Burro Blanco Flamenco.

Whare your best things? Please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

If you have ever been to Nerja you will have at least heard of El Capistrano. The chances are that you have probably stayed at one of the ‘Capistrano’ sites. With so many rental properties between them, they cater to a large percentage of the tourists attracted to Nerja.

The oldest is El Capistrano Village. This is the original urbanisation, it is also the largest. With that in mind, it is easy to see why it also has the greatest selection of holiday villas and apartments. You can get hold of a single bedroom apartment or a large villa or house with 4 bedrooms or more. A lot of the villas and apartments also have their own private pools.

Capistrano Playa is close to the famous Burriana Beach with its even more famous Ayo’s Paella, the Capistrano Oasis and El Capistrano Village are situated opposite one another just off the main N340 road. It is easier to take the second exit off the A7 Autovia del Meditteraneo for Nerja / Maro / Nerja Caves. A couple of right turns and you are in Nerja with El Capistrano to your right, just before the Supersol Supermarket and opposite the new Mercadona Supermarket.

San Juan de Capistrano is situated at a fairly elevated location, so, if you are walking, you’ll enjoy the exercise. If you don’t hire a car then its a 35-minute walk into Nerja town or a few Euro on a taxi. You can also jump on a bus.

El Capistrano Holiday Rentals

There are several companies offering accommodation on the Capistrano sites. You are really spoilt for choice. Here is a list of some of the most familiar. However, a quick search of Google brings you up to a large list of companies and private rental properties on all of the Capistrano urbanisations.

You are also well advised to check out travel sites, such as TripAdvisor for client recommendations, reports and criticisms. These are an invaluble guide to the very best Nerja villas and apartments on Capistrano.

Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol – Top Ten Hotels Costa del Sol

Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol?

Best Hotels Costa del Sol - Top ten hotels Costa del Sol

Riu Monica Nerja – According to some, one of the best hotels on the Costa del Sol

The best hotels on the Costa del Sol? The Costa del Sol, for those of you who have never been, is situated on Spain’s southern coastline, in the Province of Malaga and in the autonomous region of Andalucia.

‘Coast of the Sun’ or ‘Sun Coast’, the Costa del Sol, sits between The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) and The Costa Tropical (Tropical Coast).

It is probably the best-known area of Spain due to the mass tourism that has grown since the early seventies.

Towns of the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol includes the city of Málaga and also the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona, Manilva, Casares, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox.

Geography of the Costa del Sol

This shoreline region extends from the cliffs at Maro in the East to Punta Chullera in the west. It occupies a narrow coastal strip delimited by some ranges of the Penibaetic System, including the Sierra de Mijas, Sierra Alpujata, Sierra Blanca, Sierra Bermeja, Sierra Crestallina and Montes de Málaga to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

The coast shows a diversity of landscapes: beaches, cliffs, estuaries, bays and dunes. The rivers are short and seasonal, while the agriculture is hampered by the lee effect caused by the Baetic System.

The Costa del Sol is similar to southern California in the scenery, climate and geography. Both areas have warm weather throughout the year and average annual sunshine hours of about 3,000 hours. The Costa del Sol has some of the most expensive tourist resorts in Europe as well. Thanks to Wikipedia.

The Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol according to…

  • Melia Costa del SolSol House Costa del Sol (By Melia)
  • Marbella Hills Hotel and Spa
  • Sol Principe (By Melia)
  • Sol Malaga Guadalmar (By Melia)
  • Sunset Beach Club
  • Hotel Catalonia Ronda
  • LLunion Malaga
  • MB Boutique Hotel
  • Petit Palace Plaza Malaga

Now, that comes from the TripAdvisor website, when you search Google for the Best Hotels on the Costa del Sol.

Other travel sites will have their own opinions. So too will visitors to the Costa. It is always wise to read the travellers reviews before you book your holiday on the Spanish Costas.
Also, what makes any one of the thousands of hotels on the coast ‘the best’?

Is it quality of service, value for money, amenities, location or any other number of variables?

For my pennies worth, a clean room, polite staff and good food are what I look for.
If you have a minute and you would like to have your favourite Costa del Sol Hotel mentioned, please, drop me a line and I will be delighted to add them to my Blog.

According to some friends of mine, Riu Monica in Nerja is definitely the very best.

After all, the best hotels are those that are highly recommended by their guests.

Nerja Villas for Rent – Self Catering Villas in Nerja

Nerja Self Catering Villas for rent

Nerja Villas

Villa Catalina. Just one of many great Nerja Villas from Nerja Paradise Rentals.

The term ‘Nerja Villas’ is generic. It is a term used to cover all sorts of accommodation in Nerja. People may not be specifically looking for a ‘Villa’ per se but will use the generic term to search.

That being so, there are a host of Nerja Villas rental companies in and around the town of Nerja. Which is the best supplier of Nerja accommodation? As I a the editor of this blog, I am bound to say Nerja Paradise Rentals are the best in Nerja. Is that a biased view? Perhaps; perhaps not?

Nerja Villas - Villa Jade

Ultra modern Nerja villas – Villa Jade

What I can say, with absolute certainty is that Nerja Paradise Rentals have a list of great villas, apartments and houses. I can also say that they are a family company with a long history of customer satisfaction.

Looking for a Nerja villa, apartment or house for long or short term rental can be complicated. There are so many websites offering this, that or the other accommodation. Websites such as Air B&B, TripAdvisor, Home Away, Spain Villas and so on. The list is endless.

What you will find, if you search long enough, is that many of the same Nerja villas are on different websites and at different prices. This can be confusing.

Booking a Nerja Villa

Nerja Villas. Villa Topaz

Villa Topaz. Beautiful views over Nerja

Nowadays, people are quite savvy when it comes to the Internet. Gone are the days when you had to rely on the estate agents or travel agents for your information. Those of us over a certain age will remember trawling through glossy brochures. Endless lists of hotels, villas, apartments and houses with only the agent’s notes as any guide to quality.

Now, it is simpler. Now we go to Google and type ‘Nerja villas’ and voila! We are supplied with endless pages of websites, photographs, videos, customer references and more. It’s so easy; right?

Not really. Now we have the opposite problem. We have gone from limited information to a mass of information. It’s just a nicer problem. Booking a Nerja Villa need not be a big problem.

  1. Go to Nerja Paradise Rentals website and choose your accommodation.
  2. Check out all of the information about the property. There is all you will need to know right there. Maps, photographs, how many it sleeps, what the property contains, the lot.
  3. When you are sure you have the perfect property, there is a booking request form at the side of the page. Check your arrival and departure dates from the boxes provided (Booked in Grey, available white)
  4. Your total price will be shown underneath the box. Press ‘Book now’.

If you need help or advice

If you need any further information or assistance to help you with your booking, you can contact Nerja Paradise Rentals direct. All of the contact information is at the bottom of the page. Or you can use the contact form.

That is how easy it is to book yourself a perfect ‘villa’ in Nerja. On one website you have the villas, apartments and townhouses, the information on the property and area, easy booking for, total price and a helpline if you need it.

So, am I biased? No! I consider it a public service to help people have a great holiday on the Costa del Sol. Enjoy.

Nerja Festivals – The Feast of San Juan

Night of San Juan in Nerja – la Noche de San Juan

Fiesta de San Juan in Nerja

Last night on Burriana Beach in Nerja was different from other nights. Any night on Burriana beach is a great time to be there. With pubs, bars, restaurants, shops and of course, the sea and sand, you’re bound to have a great time.

Sunday night, the 23rd of June is a night reserved for San Juan. Fire features in many of the celebrations, with people gathering together and creating large bonfires from any kind of wood, such as old furniture, and sharing food and drinks while teens and children jump over the fires.

Each region has its own unique way to celebrate and Nerja is no different.

Who was San Juan?

St. John the Baptist, (born 1st decade BCE, Judaea, Palestine, near Jerusalem—died 28–36 CE; feast day June 24), Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the imminence of God’s Final Judgment and baptized those who repented in self-preparation for it; he is revered in the Christian church as the forerunner of Jesus Christ.

After a period of desert solitude, John the Baptist emerged as a prophet in the region of the lower Jordan River valley. He had a circle of disciples, and Jesus was among the recipients of his rite of baptism. More facts for St. John the Baptist

San Juan or Saint John is celebrated all around the world. The festivals of Midsummer’s Eve (St. John’s Eve among Christians) have roots in ancient celebrations related to the summer solstice.

Feast of Noche de San Juan in Nerja Spain

Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southward again. In later years, witches were also thought to be on their way to meetings with other powerful beings.

Fire: Bonfires are lit, usually around midnight both on beaches and inland, so much so that one usually cannot tell the smoke from the mist common in this Atlantic corner of Iberia at this time of the year, and it smells burnt everywhere.

Occasionally, a dummy is placed at the top, representing a witch or the devil. Young and old gather around them and feast mostly on pilchards, potatoes boiled in their skins and maize bread.

When it is relatively safe to jump over the bonfire, it is done three times (although it could also be nine or any odd number) for good luck at the cry of “meigas fora” (witches off!).

San Juan doesn’t stop there!

It is also common to have Queimada (drink), a beverage resulting from setting alight Galician orujo mixed with sugar, coffee beans and pieces of fruit, which is prepared while chanting an incantation against evil spirits. See More on this fascinating story from Wikipedia.

If you were not in Nerja for the feast of San Juan, make sure you don’t miss it next year.

Nerja Real Estate Agents – Top Nerja Estate Agents

Real Estate in Nerja is much sought after

Nerja Real Estate agents - Properties for sale Nerja

Property for sale in Nerja via private contract from Nerja Paradise Rentals. This is a fantastic property for generating a second income.

Here is a list of Real Estate agents in Nerja. Copy and paste into the search bar will give you access to their websites. From there you will be able to view properties for sale in Nerja. Hopefully, you will see the property you are looking for. Good luck.

Nerja Real Estate Agents

There are many more. This will do you for your starter for 10, so they say.

The term ‘des res’ applies to Nerja and the real estate in and around Nerja. ‘Des res’; A desirable residence (used as a humorous allusion to the language used in housing advertisements).

The Costa del Sol is a great draw to ex-pats and Spanish nationals alike. The sun, sea and sand attract people from all over the world in their hundreds of thousands. Every year people flock to the Costa del Sol.

Nerja is a special place on the Costa del Sol and this is reflected in the number of visitors. But not all the people coming to stay in Nerja are tourists.

Properties for sale in Nerja are also very much sought after. And for varying reasons.

Nerja Real Estate: Buying Holiday Homes in Nerja

Nerja villas with private swimming pools

Nerja villas with private swimming pools – Villa Las Dalias

Once you have been to Nerja, it is hard not to return. The charm of this Spanish coastal town has people coming back year on year. Some people are so smitten that they decide to buy a property in Nerja.

This may not be as easy as it seems. With a buoyant real estate market, the best properties can be hard to find. That is where a good real estate agent comes to the fore.

Local knowledge s a great help and the Nerja real estate agents have just that. They will find you the property that you really want, and at the best price.

Many people buy holiday homes for themselves, also, to rent out for a second income. As Nerja is so popular, this is a very achievable aim. If you consider the fact that 30 million people visit Spain each year. Out of that 30 million, the Costa del Sol attracts 35%.

So, roughly 10.5 million visitors to the Costa del. That’s a lot of visitors. So, a property to rent out is definitely something to e thinking about.

Buying a retirement home

Nerja Villas apartments houses Fore Rent

The population of Nerja is around 21,000 – 22,000 (2018) fluctuating year on year. There is a sizeable ex-pat population, roughly estimated at around 30%. So, the competition for houses is quite strong.

Real estate agents in Nerja can provide you with the easiest route to buying your own Nerja property. Although there are a limited amount of private sales. Such as the great property on offer at Nerja Paradise Rentals.

Nonetheless, you will need the help of a good real estate agent when it comes down to the legal side of real estate transfers.

Nerja Estate Agents and properties for sale – Update 28/06/19

There is a local free newspaper in Andalucia called Sur in English. This is an English language free publication that has a host of information about Southern Spain as well as Andalucia. Also, individual villages, towns and cities. Nerja is quite often featured.

This weeks edition features a story about the booming population of Malaga.

According to the Sur in English, the Costa del Sol and Malaga areas are pulling in the people. Other areas of Spain are losing residents. 10,000 new souls came to make their home in Malaga province. Many along the Costa del Sol.

The greater number of the new population is from the UK. The rest are from Europe and a small proportion from elsewhere.

This is good news for the Nerja real estate agents in particular. After all, people will always need homes.

You can check out this story and others from the Sur in English Print Edition.

Nerja villas and apartments

Nerja is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Spanish Costa del Sol. We get lots of visitors, some are returning visitors, having been in Nerja before. Others are new to Nerja and are in for a treat.

The Costa del Sol has much to offer tourists. For this reason, it is a very popular destination. Using a Nerja villa or apartment as a base gives you the freedom to explore. You need to book early though.

Nerja Paradise Rentals has many beautiful villas and apartments available in Nerja. Some are located in the town centre, some close to the beaches and others just outside the town in beautiful country settings.

Nerja is a base to discover Seville and Andalucia

Seville – More than just Oranges and Barbers

Nerja is located east of the city of Malaga on the Spanish Costa del Sol. This makes Nerja a formidable place to use as a base to discover all the delights that Andalucia has to offer.

Malaga alone has enough attractions to keep you occupied for a few weeks. But, step outside a little further and you have some of the most beautiful and interesting towns, villages and cities in Spain.

The connections to Nerja are fantastic, you will have not trouble getting around.

Just on the coast itself, you have Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Malaga, Torremolinos, Mijas. Further on Estepona, Gibraltar, Cadiz and more.

Seville is a beautiful and interesting city

For the more adventurous of you, there is Seville. If you have never been to this beautiful capital of Andalucia, please, take the time and effort to visit. It is a beautiful place.

Seville is the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region. It’s famous for flamenco dancing, particularly in its Triana neighbourhood. Major landmarks include the ornate Alcázar castle complex, built during the Moorish Almohad dynasty, and the 18th-century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza bullring. The Gothic Seville Cathedral is the site of Christopher Columbus’s tomb and a minaret turned bell tower, the Giralda.

It’s possible to drive to Seville from Nerja. It would take you just under 3 hours to do so. However; there are day trips from Nerja to Seville at under 30€. This is by far the easiest and most relaxing way. You could also go via train from Malaga.

What to see

The sights and sounds of Seville are endless. There are some places that are a ‘must see’. The Giralda Tower, Torre del Oro (Gold Tower), Parque de Maria and many more. My own personal favourite is the Plaza de España. It is amazing.

Nerja has more than enough for two weeks of any vacation but there are some places that can’t wait to be seen.

Remember; BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION EARLY! Nerja is very popular in the whole year round. Check out the main Nerja Paradise Rentals main pages for the best in Nerja villas, apartments, and townhouses.

Nerja Town Centre Accommodation

Nerja town centre accommodation- Nerja’s best location for apartments

Nerja town centre apartments - Feast of San Isidro

Anywhere in Nerja is a great place to be. Town centre apartments though, they are great for people who just like to stroll around, rather than drive.

Also, being in the very centre gives you pride of place when local events are happening. In May, for instance, there are always communions and confirmations at the church of El Salvador. These can often be grand affairs.

Other such events, in May, for instance, are the May Crosses.

Nerja Town Centre accommodation, May treats

May Crosses on May 3rd 2019, in the central squares of the town, the altars are adorned with flowers. There are music and traditional folk dancing in addition to tasting all kinds of food seasoned with the typical molasses.

Pilgrimage of San Isidro, May 15th. San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers, is celebrated in all municipalities of the Costa del Sol.

From the Balcon de Europa starts a pilgrimage bringing the saint up to the Caves of Nerja. This is followed by horses and carriages.

It is the largest popular procession of the Axarquia. Thus people come dressed in traditional Andalucian costumes and there is food, drink, dancing and singing until late at night.

Isidoro the Farm Labourer, also known as Isidore the Farmer. He was a Spanish farmworker known for his piety toward the poor and animals. Isidro is the Catholic patron saint of farmers and of Madrid, and of La Ceiba, Honduras. The feast of San Isidro is celebrated on May 15th each year.

Again, there is always something to see and do. Join in the Fiesta and enjoy your stay in your Nerja town centre apartment.

There is an excellent website called ‘Explore Nerja’ which gives you all the information on the San Isidro festivities.

Nerja in May – Hot weather and Holy Communions

Nerja in May: A month of First Communions

Nerja May weather and holy communions

Inside the Church of El Salvador, Nerja.

Nerja is a fantastic place to be at any time of the year. I have said this many times and so, I’ll say it again. Each month brings something different and interesting.

We have just finished Semana Santa or ‘Holy Week’. So, the next big event (for some places) was the feast of San Marco. The villages head off into the countryside to have BBQ’s, feasts and a good time. All are made welcome.

April is gone and the month of May is upon us once more.

In Nerja, as in almost every town and village in Spain, children of the Catholic faith will make la Primera Comuniòn or first holy communion. Its a time for snow white dresses, lace veils for the girls along with white shoes and socks.

The boys will have a smart suit or crisp white shirt and trousers. Some may even have a uniform of sorts.

It is a time of great excitement, not just for the children and parents but for the whole community.

Spain is a predominantly Catholic country, so, May is a big month. Some of the communion parties are communal affairs, with some families sharing the big day. They will bloc-book a restaurant for this event, so, its always wise to check first if there is communion on before you decide to eat out.

Some people go way over the top. The holy communion is treated more like a lavish wedding. This is a sight to behold.

Weather in Nerja for May?

The weather in Nerja for May is excellent. You can expect a high of 19ºC – 24ºC on average. This is more than pleasant. Its shorts and T-shirts time. There might be the odd bit of rain but that is not unusual.

Predicted rain for May is 24mm over 8 days, not exactly a deluge of biblical proportions. The sea temperature will be about 24ºC. Here is a link for Nerja weather.

May in Nerja can be very popular. For this reason, it is wise to book your villa, apartment or townhouse to avoid disappointment. Check out what is available from Nerja Paradise Rentals.

If you need any further help or information, please contact us. We will be delighted to help you.

Tapas Route Nerja 2019 the Top Ten Tapas in Nerja

Tapas Trails or Tapas Run Tapas Routes – Its the same thing in Nerja

Nerja tapas route 2019

Tapas have evolved into being small portions of what’s on offer from the main menu.

Tapas. The history of tapas (A tapa is a top or cover) is as colourful as the food itself.

History would have it that these tasty morsels of food came about when the king of Spain (they don’t say which one) stopped off for a drink and something to eat. As there were many flies about, he was given a piece of bread to cover his glass.

This simple method did the job. It goes on to say that; over time, the bread became a little more interesting with the addition of morsels of food from the menu.

Fast forward to 2019, Nerja on the Spanish Costa del Sol. Taps are probably more popular now than ever they were. Since the kings first humble bread tapa, taps have become part of Spanish culture. It is definitely up there with Flamenco, siesta, bullfighting and whitewashed buildings.

From the very simple bread and cheese tapa to the more contemporary and aesthetic offerings, the meek ‘tapa’ has come a long way. People now go out of their way to create art from everyday food.

Tapas Trails or Tapas Runs

When you come and stay in Nerja Paradise villas or apartments, you will be able to participate in a tapas trail or tapas run. It’s the same thing, just a matter of whether you prefer the more sporty ‘run’ verb to the mysterious ‘trail’ adjective.

Nerja’s Tapa Route 019 will be held from Monday, April 22nd and will run through Sunday, May 19th. As usual, its great value at just 1.80€ for a beer and a bite to eat.

How it works (In most places)

A tapas run is usually organised by the town hall or some other institution.

A list of participating bars, restaurants and cafe’s are produced and the aim is to visit each place. At each location, you choose from their top tapas.

You are furnished with a list from which you mark the best tapas. After visiting them all, your form is handed into the town hall or administrating person. The results are counted and, the top ranking tapas will be declared the winner.

This is great for the bars and restaurants in the towns and cities. Word soon gets about that this place or the other place has the best tapas in town.

It is also not just about getting as much food and drink down you in one day. The larger competitions will be spread over two days or more, in some places, like Nerja, for instance, the tapas route lasts for almost a month.

This gives visiting tourists the chance to participate. After all, you would have a job trying to down 20 drinks and 20 tapas and still be able to fill in your form.

tapas runs or trails are great fun and also a great social event. Nerja has several Tapas Runs. Here is a little tapas guide that you might find useful.

The 2019 tapas route and some of its participants can be found here.

If you need more information on this or other events, or, to book a villa, house or apartment in Nerja. Please contact us and we will be delighted to help.

We hope you will have a great time and enjoy your stay in beautiful Nerja on the Costa del Sol.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Spain 2019 – Watch the Nerja parades

Holy Week or Semana Santa / Easter Week is a fantastic time to be in Nerja. And anywhere else in Spain for that matter. If there is one thing the Spanish are fantastic at, it is creating an event. They do it in style and on a grand scale. No half measures.

Semana Santa  in Nerja. Penitents parading in Nerja. The robes were widely used in the medieval period for penitents, who could demonstrate their penance while still masking their identity.

Semana Santa in Spain. Penitent parading in Villanueva del Trabuco. The robes were widely used in the medieval period for penitents, who could demonstrate their penance while still masking their identity.

Why do they celebrate Semana Santa or Holy Week in Spain?

Semana Santa  in Nerja. Penitents parading in Nerja.

Looks quite scary? Penitent on Semana Santa

With this in mind, I’ve trawled the Internet for answers to questions often asked about Semana Santa and its traditions.

Holy Week in Spain is the annual tribute of the Passion of Jesus Christ celebrated by Catholic religious brotherhoods (Spanish: cofradía) and fraternities that perform penance processions on the streets of almost every Spanish city and town during the last week of Lent, the week immediately before Easter.

Semana Santa runs from Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) to Easter Sunday (Domingo de Pascua), but since students (and some workers) enjoy a two-week break at this time, the full week preceding Easter as well as the following week comprise the Semana Santa holiday. The date of Easter changes from year to year.

No Easter Eggs for Semana Santa?

While chocolate Easter eggs are becoming more and more popular, they are not traditionally a big part of Easter celebrations in Spain. But that’s not to say Spaniards don’t have special sweet treats for Holy Week; Pestiños are little pastries popular throughout Spain, but especially in Andalusia.

A favourite dessert during Holy Week in Andalucia is rice pudding, arroz con leche, and you can expect most local bakeries to be offering torrijas. These are slices of bread dipped in egg then soaked in wine or milk, fried and sweetened with sugar and sprinkled with cinnamon.

Palm Sunday; What is it all about?

Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9) when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

Why did Jesus enter riding an Ass?

Jesus‘ entry on a donkey has a parallel in Zechariah 9:9 which states that: thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass. Therefore, Jesus‘ entry to Jerusalem symbolized his entry as the Prince of Peace, not as a warmongering king

Nerja puts on its own Semana Santa parades and they are great events. With this in mind, you should be booking your villa, apartment or house in Nerja for Semana Santa to take full advantage.

Also, for some of the terminology of Semana Santa, I have added a link. Click the main photograph. This will take you to a Holy Week Glossary. Here you will find a wealth of information, both interesting and informative.

Check out the main Nerja Paradise website for full details. You can contact us if you require more information or help with your booking. We will be delighted to hear from you.

Easy Rabo de Toro or Oxtail Recipe

Rabo de Toro – As popular as Roast Beef

Rabo de Toro or bull's tail in Nerja Spain

What is Spain’s favourite meat dish? There are many to choose from. Taco de Lomo, Secreto de Iberico, Cerdo con Salsa Almendro?. I’ve tried most of them, if not all of them. Another contender is Chivo (Kid Goat) or Jamon Asado (Spit Roasted Ham).

But, it matters not because it is all down to personal choice. What is abundantly clear though is that almost everyone would have Rabo de Toro at the top of their list.

Rabo de Toro is simply ‘tail of the bull’, Oxtail to anyone from the UK. I suppose you could compare this with Roast Beef in the UK and Ireland, in terms of its popularity.

This is a very traditional Spanish dish that is eaten everywhere. There are many Nerja restaurants that will serve you up this delicious meal. This is a slow cooked dish that is more than worth waiting for.

I have searched the Internet for the best or easiest recipes but I must admit, I prefer my own Rabo de Toro recipe.

Rabo de Toro made easy

You will need the following ingredients.

  • 1 Bull tail. These can be bought already prepared from any butcher or supermarket around Nerja.
  • 100g of plain flour
  • 1 large onion chopped roughly
  • 4 large carrots chopped roughly
  • 1 clove of Garlic
  • 1 red pepper
  • 100g of butter
  • 100 ml of olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of Pimienton (ground sweet red pepper9
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 500mls of water
  • Salt and pepper

Put the plain flour,  a teaspoon of salt and pepper into a clear freezer bag, add the bull’s tail, 2 pieces at a time. Shake the bag so the tail gets coated in flour.

Heat a large pot over high heat and add the butter and olive oil. Add the bull’s tail and cook until brown on both sides.

Take the meat out of the pan and set it aside.

Add the vegetables, onions, garlic and brown them.

Add the meat back to the pan, add water and crumble in the stock cube. Bring to the boil and then simmer on very low heat for 90 minutes.

Add the Pimienton and stir the pot. If you like a thick gravy, let the liquid reduce, if you like it thinner, add more water. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Once the meat is tender, take out and serve with mashed potatoes or chips or whatever else you fancy.

That’s it! Here you have a very simple dish but well worth taking your time over. There are many different Rabo de Toro recipe’s, you’ll no doubt come up with your own.

When you do visit us in Nerja, do try the local Rabo de Toro and let us know what you think.
