Nerja Caves to stop live Performances because of higher tourist numbers and risk to the Caves
There is a report in the Sur in English this week (13/12/19) that all live performances in the Nerja Caves are to cease.
According to the Sur, visitor numbers have increased dramatically to the area, mostly due to the online booking ticket sales for caves entrance. This decision has been made after advice from scientists who believe the live performances and the added tourists are taken a toll mon the caves. To prevent any further erosion the decision was taken by the Nerja Cave Foundation.
The increase in tourism is around 2.9% in previous years, 445,000 people will have visited the area by the end of 2019.
In future, all live events will be held outside in the exclusive gardens.
This is a great shame, because, if you have ever been to a live performance in the Nerja Caves you would realise how wonderful the place is.
