Ooh! Suites you Sir!
A quiet Sunday evening in Granada’s San Ildefonso neighbourhood took a bizarre turn when a nearly naked man brazenly forced his way into an elderly woman’s flat, donned her dressing gown, and casually prepared himself a meal. What followed was an unusual standoff that required the combined efforts of the local police and the fire brigade to resolve.
An Uninvited Guest
The surreal incident unfolded on Calle Parra Alta de Cartuja around 9:40 p.m. The elderly resident, hearing strange noises outside her door, opened it slightly—only to be met with a foot wedging itself through the gap. In a matter of seconds, a semi-naked stranger shoved past her and made himself at home, leaving the terrified woman no choice but to flee into the street, screaming for help.
Shaken but determined, she called for assistance as stunned neighbours peered through the apartment’s window. What they saw was nothing short of astonishing: the intruder had draped himself in one of the woman’s dressing gowns and was now casually preparing dinner, completely indifferent to the chaos he had caused.
A Dramatic Response
Calls flooded into emergency services, prompting the rapid arrival of three units of the Local Police. Officers attempted to coax the man into surrendering, but he seemed entirely detached from reality, oblivious to the growing crowd and the flashing blue lights outside.
Realizing that conventional negotiation was getting nowhere, police turned to the fire brigade for assistance. Firefighters gained access through an interior patio, quickly entering the flat and apprehending the suspect. He was then escorted to the city’s National Police headquarters, where authorities learned he was a homeless man suffering from an infectious respiratory disease. As a precaution, officers entering the apartment had worn protective masks.
A Neighbourhood on Edge
The elderly woman, overwhelmed by the ordeal, suffered a nervous breakdown and required medical attention. “She was having trouble breathing from the fright,” one neighbour recounted. Meanwhile, others described the commotion that had unfolded. “We didn’t hear the screams because the TV was too loud, but when we saw the flashing police lights, we knew something serious was happening,” another resident explained.
This isn’t the first unsettling event to shake the otherwise peaceful neighbourhood. Earlier in February, another resident was mugged at knifepoint. However, the locals take pride in their tight-knit community, where solidarity prevails. “Here, if someone raises their voice for help, we all come running,” one resident remarked.
Despite recent disturbances, San Ildefonso remains a cherished part of Granada—a blend of old-world charm, friendly faces, and a vibrant university presence. “We hope incidents like this don’t become a trend,” the neighbourhood association stated, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining the area’s tranquil character.
For now, the residents of Calle Parra Alta de Cartuja can only hope their next surprise visitor will be far less dramatic.
