Ximenez Iluminación has already commenced the installation of wiring for the spectacular festive display, a cherished tradition that draws tens of thousands of visitors to the city annually.

The countdown has begun for Friday, November 24th, the day when Malaga City will illuminate its famous Christmas lights.

This week, the electrical company Ximenez Iluminación initiated the wiring process throughout the city, marking the initial phase of the installation of lights that entice tens of thousands of visitors and shoppers to Malaga each year.

Although preliminary preparations are underway, the first bulbs will not be installed until early November.

One notable change for this year is the introduction of a Christmas light show in the Botanical-Historical Garden La Concepción, with Contrarider taking the lead in this exciting addition.

Turkey breast wrapped in bacon and cooked in an air fryer

Recipe for turkey breast wrapped in bacon and on a bed of lentils

Turkey Breast Wrapped in Bacon

**Ingredients:**
– 1 boneless turkey breast (approximately 2 pounds)
– 6-8 slices of bacon
– 1 tablespoon olive oil
– 1 teaspoon garlic powder
– 1 teaspoon onion powder
– 1 teaspoon dried thyme
– 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
– Cooking spray (for the air fryer basket)

Turkey Breast wrapped in bacon cooked in an air fryer
Turkey Breast, wrapped in bacon, cooked in an air fryer and on a bed of lentils

**Instructions:**

1. **Prep the Turkey Breast:**
– Begin by patting the turkey breast dry with paper towels. This helps the bacon adhere better to the turkey.

2. **Season Turkey:**
– Mix the garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, rosemary, salt, and black pepper in a small bowl.

3. **Coat the Turkey:**
– Drizzle the olive oil over the turkey breast and rub it all over to create a thin, even coating.
– Sprinkle the seasoning mix you prepared in step 2 all over the turkey. Make sure to season it evenly on all sides.

4. **Wrap with Bacon:**
– Lay the bacon strips side by side on a clean surface, slightly overlapping.
– Place the seasoned turkey breast on top of the bacon strips.
– Carefully wrap the bacon around the turkey, ensuring it’s well-covered. Use toothpicks to secure the bacon in place, if necessary.

5. **Preheat the Air Fryer:**
– Preheat your air fryer to 360°F (180°C) for about 5 minutes.

6. **Cook the Turkey:**
– Lightly grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
– Place the bacon-wrapped turkey breast in the air fryer basket, seam side down. This ensures that the bacon stays in place.
– Cook at 360°F (180°C) for about 25-30 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time (around 15 minutes), flip the turkey breast to ensure even cooking. You can also baste it with some of the rendered bacon fat for added flavour.

7. **Check for Doneness:**
– Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the turkey. It should read at least 165°F (74°C) when inserted into the thickest part of the meat. If you haven’t got one, prick with a toothpick and see if the juices run clear.

8. **Crisp the Bacon (Optional):**
– If the bacon isn’t as crispy as you’d like, increase the air fryer temperature to 400°F (200°C) for the last few minutes of cooking. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.

9. **Rest and Serve:**
– Once the turkey breast reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the air fryer and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute and keeps the meat moist.
– Slice the turkey and serve it with your favourite sides.

Enjoy your delicious turkey breast wrapped in bacon, cooked to perfection in the air fryer!

Eating Out in Spain – Cheese, Serrano Ham Boat

“La Barca” (The Boat)

La Barca; Ham, Cheese, bread and tomato platter with a nice bottle of Ribera del Duero wine.
La Barca; Ham, Cheese, bread and tomato platter with a nice bottle of Ribera del Duero wine.

Eating Out in Nerja and Elsewhere

This is a variation on a theme, or so the saying goes. This beautiful platter consists of Serrano Ham, Manchego Cheese, grated Tomato and fresh-cut bread that has been lightly toasted and accompanied by a bottle of Ribera del Duero wine.

I say a variation on a theme as you would find elements of this on many a Spanish breakfast plate. Tostada con tomate.

A “tostada con tomate” is a popular Spanish dish that translates to “toast with tomato” in English. It’s a simple and delicious snack or appetizer commonly found in Spanish cuisine.

To make it, you typically start with a slice of toasted bread, which can be either baguette or rustic bread. Then, you infuse a ripe tomato over the toasted bread with the tomato’s juices and flavour. Afterwards, you can drizzle some olive oil and add a pinch of salt to taste.

Some variations include toppings like garlic or jamón serrano (Spanish cured ham) for added flavour.

It’s a quick and easy dish that showcases the freshness and simplicity of Mediterranean flavours. Enjoy!

You will find a plate similar to this in most restaurants and bars in Nerja. It is a great way to spend a pleasant afternoon. A nice bottle of Ribera del Duero helped things along.

Ribera del Duero is a renowned wine region in Spain, known for producing high-quality red wines, primarily from the Tempranillo grape variety. This wine makes a change from the Rioja and is reasonably priced.

If you venture out of Nerja and head inland, you will find some excellent bars and restaurants. This lunch was at El Cortijuelo, close to the village of Villanueva del Trabuco, about 1 hour drive from Nerja.

At about 27€, food, wine, a large beer and Tinto de Verano (Summer wine made with vino tinto and fizzy lemon) you can’t beat that for great value.

La Tomatina: Spain’s Juiciest Fiesta of Fun and Tomatoes

Change Mud for Tomatoes and you have a Spanish Glastonbury – Wednesday 30th August 2023

La Tomatina of Buñol in Valencia, Spain
One heck of a “bloody Mary”: La Tomatina is a chance for some fun!

When it comes to unique and exhilarating festivals, Spain knows how to throw a party like no other. One such event that stands out from the crowd is “La Tomatina,” a vibrant and messy celebration that has captured the hearts of locals and tourists alike. Held annually in the town of Buñol, this iconic tomato-throwing fiesta is a testament to Spain’s zest for life, camaraderie, and, of course, an abundance of ripe red tomatoes!

The Origins:

La Tomatina traces its origins back to a fateful day in the late 1940s. The story goes that a group of young friends attending a parade decided to add some playful spontaneity to the event. A street fight ensued, and several stalls of tomatoes were among the casualties. Seemingly unfazed by the mess they had created, the young participants engaged in an impromptu tomato war. The following year, they returned with their own supply of tomatoes, kicking off a tradition that would evolve into one of Spain’s most famous festivities.

Preparation and Ritual:

Today, La Tomatina has become a well-organized event that attracts participants from all over the world. Held on the last Wednesday of August, the festival’s preparation involves an immense logistical effort. Tons of tomatoes are shipped into the small town of Buñol, transforming its streets into a tomato battlefield. The local shops and houses are draped with plastic covers to protect them from the impending splatter.

The actual event begins when participants scramble to reach a ham at the top of a greased pole – a tradition that kicks off the tomato-throwing frenzy. Once the ham is grabbed, trucks loaded with tomatoes make their way through the streets, eagerly awaited by a sea of excited revellers.

The Tomato Tango:

As the signal is given to start, the streets erupt into a scene that can only be described as organized chaos. Tomatoes fly through the air, creating a tidal wave of red amidst shouts of glee. Strangers become allies as they team up to launch tomato salvos at rival factions, and friends become targets in a friendly food fight of epic proportions.

It’s not just about the tomatoes, though. Amidst the laughter and the mess, bonds are formed, and a sense of community blooms. The event is a beautiful metaphor for the unifying power of shared experiences, bringing together people of different backgrounds and nationalities to celebrate a simple joy: throwing tomatoes at each other.

The Aftermath:

As the tomato dust settles and the last tosses are made, the streets of Buñol transform into a riverside of tomato puree. But the mess is not the focus – it’s the unforgettable memories, the camaraderie, and the sheer delight that linger in the air. Local fire trucks hose down participants and streets alike, leaving behind a clean slate for the next year’s festivity.

Conclusion:

La Tomatina is not just about tomatoes – it’s a celebration of life, spontaneity, and the boundless human capacity for joy. This peculiar fiesta has transcended its humble origins to become a global symbol of fun and unity. So, if you’re ever in Spain in late August, consider trading your fancy clothes for old ones, joining the tomato tango, and relishing in the juicy joy that is La Tomatina. After all, some of life’s most memorable experiences are the messiest ones!

If you are staying in Nerja, please don’t start throwing tomatoes, you are a long way from Buñol!

Day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Assumption of Mary: A Journey of Spiritual Significance

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Today is a Spanish holiday to mark the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. People will celebrate it in their way. Some will go to church, and, others will go to restaurants or the beach. However it is celebrated, here is what you need to know about this special day.

Introduction

The Assumption of Mary is a profound event in the Christian tradition that holds great spiritual significance. This event marks the transition of the Virgin Mary from her earthly life to her heavenly abode, symbolizing her union with God and highlighting the importance of faith, devotion, and the promise of eternal life. Let’s delve into the details of this sacred event and explore its lasting impact on the lives of believers.

The Assumption of Mary: Historical and Theological Context

The Assumption of Mary is not explicitly mentioned in the New Testament like the Ascension of Jesus. Instead, it has been preserved through centuries of oral tradition, apocryphal writings, and the deep devotion of the faithful. The most well-known account of the Assumption is found in the apocryphal text “The Dormition of Mary” or “The Falling Asleep of Mary,” which dates back to the 5th century.

While there might not be a unanimous agreement on the historical accuracy of this event, the theological significance of the Assumption is widely recognized in various Christian denominations, including Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and certain Anglican traditions.

The Spiritual Symbolism

1. Mary as a Model of Faith: The Assumption of Mary is a testament to her unwavering faith and obedience to God. Her life serves as a model for believers, showing that true discipleship involves complete surrender to divine will, even in the face of the unknown.

2. Divine Favor and Sanctity: The Assumption is a sign of God’s favour and recognition of Mary’s exceptional holiness. This event emphasizes her unique role as the Mother of God and affirms her as a mediator between humanity and divinity.

3. Hope for the Faithful: Mary’s Assumption offers hope and comfort to believers by demonstrating the promise of eternal life. Her assumption into heaven prefigures the ultimate destiny of all Christians, reminding them that death is not the end but a transition to a more profound existence in God’s presence.

4. Unity of Body and Soul: The Assumption underscores the unity of the human person, where both body and soul are valued in God’s plan. This belief contrasts with the dualistic worldview of separating the spiritual and the material.

Cultural Impact and Celebrations

The Assumption of Mary holds a significant place in Christian culture. In many countries, it’s celebrated as a feast day. In the Roman Catholic Church, it is a Holy Day of Obligation, emphasizing the importance of attending Mass and reflecting on Mary’s role in salvation history.

Artistic depictions of the Assumption are abundant in various forms, including paintings, sculptures, and stained glass windows. These artworks often convey Mary’s serene ascent to heaven, surrounded by angels and divine light, encapsulating the event’s mystical nature.

Conclusion

The Asencion of Mary, also known as the Assumption, is a spiritual event that speaks to the depths of faith, devotion, and the eternal promise of God’s grace. While the historical details might vary, the theological significance of Mary’s transition from earthly life to heavenly glory remains a central tenet in Christianity. This event inspires believers to emulate Mary’s unwavering faith, find hope in the promise of eternal life, and recognize the unity of body and soul in God’s divine plan. As the faithful continue to celebrate and reflect on the Assumption, the legacy of Mary’s ascent to heaven continues to shape the spiritual journey of millions around the world.

So, if you are in Nerja for a holiday, why not join in any celebrations that are taking place.

Chicken Wrapped in Bacon With Chickpeas – Pollo Envuelto En Tocino Con Garbanzos

Pollo Envuelto En Tocino Con Garbanzos

Chicken wrapped in bacon with chickpeas

This dish is a tad similar to UK Hunters Chicken, insomuch as it is chicken wrapped in bacon. However, trust me, this dish is as Spanish as you can get. The Garbanzos or Chickpeas are a bit of a staple here in Spain. They are cheap, they go with any dish you like, they are filling but, most of all, they taste great!

In the photo, I have the chicken on a bed of chickpeas and a mound of homemade pickled red onions and fresh chives from my garden. The beer and Piri-Piri sauce are optional. I prepared this dish in a Cosori Air Fryer.

Ingredients:

2 x small chicken breasts

6 rashers of bacon of your choice (I use smoked)

1 jar of chickpeas (Garbanzos)

Salt and Pepper

1 stock cube

Oil spray for the air fryer

Method:

Cut the chicken breasts halfway down, lengthways at the thicker end (to help the meat cook evenly)

Lay 3 pieces of bacon, for each portion, on a work surface and place the chicken breast on top. Starting from the thin end, wrap the bacon around the chicken, covering as much as you can.

Spray the air fryer basket and place the chicken inside. There is a preset on the Casori Air Fryer (195C for 25 minutes) simply press “Go” check back halfway through and turn the chicken over.

In a saucepan, having washed the chickpeas, add them to the pan and crumble in a stock cube and enough water to cover them, (I used chicken OXO) and bring to a boil then gentle simmer. add salt and pepper to taste.

That’s basically it! When the chicken is cooked, serve it on a bed of chickpeas and jazz it up in whatever way you like.

Enjoy!

CHAOS ERUPTS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL!

If ever there was a case for self-catering in Nerja

I came across a video on Instagram, thanks to the Liverpool Echo, of holidaymakers somewhere on the Costa del Sol. What I saw reinforced my belief in self-catering holidays.

Fifty or more guests wait, like naughty children, to get their towels on a sunbed. It is quite amusing; it is also quite sad. Take a look at the video and see if you know where this hotel is. My guess is Fuengirola but, I could be wrong.

Self-catering holidays offer several benefits that appeal to a wide range of travellers. Some of these benefits include:

  1. Flexibility: Self-catering holidays provide the freedom to create your schedule. You’re not bound by hotel dining hours, allowing you to eat and explore at your own pace.
  2. Cost-Effective: Self-catering accommodations often have kitchen facilities, allowing you to prepare your meals. This can significantly cut down on dining expenses, as you can buy groceries and cook your favourite dishes.
  3. Space and Privacy: Self-catering accommodations, such as rental apartments or cottages, offer more space than traditional hotel rooms. This extra room provides a greater sense of privacy and comfort, making it suitable for families and larger groups.
  4. Local Experience: Staying in a self-catering property often means living in a residential neighbourhood, providing a more authentic experience of the local culture. You can shop at local markets, interact with residents, and immerse yourself in the destination.
  5. Cooking Preferences: If you have specific dietary restrictions or preferences, self-catering allows you to tailor your meals to your needs. This can be especially important for those with allergies or other dietary considerations.
  6. Socializing: Many self-catering accommodations have communal spaces, such as kitchens or living rooms, where you can socialize with your travel companions. This can foster a sense of togetherness and make the trip more enjoyable.
  7. Extended Stays: Self-catering is ideal for longer trips or stays. A fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities can make extended travel more convenient and comfortable.
  8. Home Away from Home: With self-catering, you can create a homey atmosphere during your vacation. You have the space to spread out, relax, and unwind in a way that might not be possible in a hotel room.
  9. Cost Sharing: For group trips, self-catering accommodations can be cost-effective as the cost of renting a larger property can be split among several people, making it more affordable compared to booking multiple hotel rooms.
  10. Pet-Friendly Options: If you’re travelling with pets, self-catering properties often provide more pet-friendly options compared to hotels, allowing you to bring your furry companions along.

Remember, the benefits of self-catering holidays can vary based on personal preferences, the destination, and the specific accommodations you choose. It’s essential to consider your travel style and needs when deciding whether a self-catering holiday is the right choice for you.

Andalucia Idioms that you might find useful

What exactly is an idiom?

Andalucia Idioms and Phrases

You encounter them daily, but you might be wondering about their essence. Idioms are phrases or fixed expressions employed to convey a figurative rather than a literal meaning. The English language boasts an excess of 25,000 idiomatic expressions, and this count continually expands as languages evolve.

Why delve into the realm of Spanish idioms?

The Spanish language abounds in idiomatic expressions. While some possess direct counterparts in other languages, others defy translation almost entirely. In certain instances, context aids in inferring the meanings of these Spanish phrases upon hearing them. Yet, in many cases, comprehending them proves elusive if one hasn’t encountered them before, even for those who possess a high proficiency in Spanish.

A majority of idioms are intrinsically tied to the specific country or region of origin. Given Spanish’s widespread usage, the reservoir of idioms is vast. The idiomatic expressions used by Spanish speakers from Spain differ from those favoured by individuals in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, or Venezuela.

Enclosed herein are 40 Spanish idioms characteristic of Spain (albeit some are internationally recognized). These have been categorized into four distinct groups, complete with a direct translation, their intended meaning, and their corresponding English equivalent.

10 ANDALUCIAN IDIOMS

Absolutely, here’s a list of 10 Andalusian idiomatic expressions, along with their English translations and meanings:

  2. Idiom: “Más agarrado que un chotis en un columpio” Translation: “Tighter than a sardine on a swing” Meaning: Being extremely frugal or stingy with money.

  10. Idiom: “A otro perro con ese hueso” Translation: “To another dog with that bone” Meaning: Expressing disbelief or scepticism, similar to “pull the other one” in English.

What’s your favourite idiom?

When I first moved to Spain, some 22-plus years ago, with my limited Spanish, I tried to explain some English idioms to my neighbour.

¿El Papa es Católico? (Is the Pope a Catholic?) met with “Si, Claro!” (Yes, of course?) and “¿Mi cara está roja?” (Is my face Red?) was even less successful as he recommended a stronger sun cream. I gave up there and then and I decided to learn some of the local lingo.

I’ll leave this one with you to work out; ¿Los  Osos cagen en el Bosque? he said scratching his head. “¿Dónde más cagaría un oso?”

Remember that idioms are culturally nuanced, and their translations might not always capture the full essence of the expression. Keep your ears open for any Nerja idioms (they might be referring to you!)

August Weather to Arrive With Three Days of Hot Terral Wind

Amber alert for high temperatures in Malaga

August weather to Arrive With Three Days of Hot Terral Wind

After a brief period of relief from the heat, high temperatures are expected to return to Malaga province. Aemet, the state Met Office, has issued a yellow warning for the Antequera area on the last day of July, with maximum temperatures reaching 38°C between 1 pm and 9 pm. This sets the stage for a challenging week ahead, with the weather playing a significant role once again.

Looking ahead, Aemet has issued an amber warning for Tuesday in Malaga City, the western strip of the Costa del Sol, and the Valle del Guadalhorce, where temperatures are expected to soar to 40°C between 1 pm and 9 pm.

Weather expert José Luis Escudero has predicted the arrival of the hot “terral” wind on August 1st, affecting the usual areas of the province, including Malaga city and the Axarquia. Rincón de la Victoria may also experience the terral during the day on Thursday. However, temperatures on Thursday are not expected to be as high as the previous days.

The weather in Malaga is hot! hot! hot!

In Malaga city, Aemet forecasts a scorching 40°C and a very high minimum overnight temperature of 25 degrees. Meanwhile, in the Ronda and Antequera areas, maximum temperatures are not anticipated to be as extreme as before.

Escudero also warns of strong westerly gusts along the coast of Malaga and the Alboran Sea, likely leading to the activation of a yellow warning for coastal phenomena in the provinces of Malaga, Granada, and Almeria. Additionally, the seawater temperature on Thursday is expected to be around 18 degrees.

In Malaga City, Aemet predicts wind gusts of 20 kilometres per hour, adding to the weather complexities of the upcoming week.

Needless to say, people need to remember to drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun at the hottest times of the day.

You can check the weather here Aemet.

Ingredients:

2 red onions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup Red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon salt
Dried parsley (optional, for added flavour)

Instructions:

Prepare the onions: Peel the red onions and slice them thinly. You can use a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer for even slices.

Sterilize the jar: Before you start pickling, ensure the jar you’ll be using is clean and sterilized. You can do this by washing it with hot, soapy water and rinsing it thoroughly.

Combine vinegar and honey: In a small saucepan, add the white wine vinegar and honey. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring until the honey is dissolved. You don’t need to bring it to a boil; just warm it enough to mix the ingredients.

Add salt and parsley: Once the honey is fully dissolved in the vinegar, stir in the teaspoon of salt and a sprinkle of dried parsley for extra flavour. The parsley is optional, but it adds a nice touch to the pickled onions.

Pack the jar: Place the thinly sliced red onions into the sterilized jar.

Pour the vinegar mixture: Carefully pour the warm vinegar mixture over the sliced onions in the jar. Ensure that the onions are fully covered with the liquid.

Let it cool: Allow the pickling liquid and onions to cool down to room temperature.

Seal and refrigerate: Once cooled, tightly seal the jar with its lid and place it in the refrigerator. The pickled onions will be ready to eat after a few hours, but for the best flavour, let them marinate for at least 24 hours before using.

These pickled red onions can be a fantastic addition to salads, sandwiches, tacos, burgers, and various other dishes. Enjoy the tangy and sweet flavour of your homemade pickled onions! Remember, pickled onions can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks. This is Ideal for your beach holidays.
